Sweet and Savoury
I saved a blog post by Nutrition Stripped at the start of 2015 on healthy popcorn toppings and knew it would come in handy eventually. I received an air popper popcorn machine for a gift and ever since I’ve constantly been saving healthy popcorn recipes but have never gotten around to trying many of them. I have a couple of simple go to recipes tht I’m always making when I want a light and tasty snack but for this post I’ll be testing the four different and intersting popcorn topping recipes by Nutrition Stripped.
Whether you’re going to the cinemas or watching movies at home with mates, popcorn seems to be the go to snack as it is light, yummy and perfect for sharing. Plain old popped corn is fairly healthy but that tasty and that hot buttery Commerical popcorn from the cinemas that we all love is, well, not that healthy at all. It’s so easy to make your own healthy flavours that are tasty and just as satisfying. They can be sweet or savoury, whatever takes your fancy.
If you use an air popper to pop the corn kernels, like I did, I recommend tossing the popcorn through some melted coconut oil before adding the toppings as this will help the seasonings and powders to stick to the popcorn rather then dropping to the bottom of the bowl. If you don’t have a popper, Nutrition Stripped has included in her blog post on how to make the popcorn.
The chocolate matcha flavour can also be made with just the chocolate sauce drizzled over the popcorn if you’re a sweet tooth but not a fan of the matcha.
Cinnamon and Sea Salt
Add to Popcorn:
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons coarse sea salt
Toss to combine and adjust seasonings to your taste.
Turmeric Spiced
Add to Popcorn:
- 2-3 teaspoons ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 2 teaspoons sea salt.
Adjust all seasonings to your taste.
Add these ingredients right after the popcorn has popped. You can always use a little extra coconut oil to help the spices evenly coat.
Lastly, drizzle honey on top right before serving.
Herb and Cheeze
Add to Popcorn:
- 1/2 cup nutritional yeast
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup fresh chopped parsley, rosemary, and chives
- 2 teaspoons sea salt
- top with red pepper flakes
Nutritional yeast loves to stick to things, so adding more oil will help this process.
Add these ingredients right after the popcorn has popped, I find stirring these ingredients into the same pot very easy and helpful for evenly coating all the popcorn. You can always use a little extra coconut oil to help the spices evenly coat.
Matcha Dark Chocolate
Add to Popcorn:
- 3 teaspoons matcha tea powder
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
Add these ingredients right after the popcorn has popped, I find stirring these ingredients into the same pot very easy and helpful for evenly coating all the popcorn. You can always use a little extra coconut oil to help the spices evenly coat.
For the chocolate sauce:
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/4 heaping cup coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
Melt in a small saucepan to combine.
Lastly, drizzle melted raw chocolate on top right before serving.
